The story
Upon returning from a trip to India, I wanted to experience making mandalas. Intricate geometric compositions created in the shape of a circle have a deep spiritual meaning in Hinduism and Buddhism. They represent the whole of the universe, and they can be used as an exercise or for meditation. Recently, they have become popular in the US. The basic idea of drawing a radial pattern has been used as a tool for therapy or simple relaxation, and when I created these, I definitely felt this centering effect. These pieces took a great deal of measuring, but something about being so intimately involved in balance and symmetry seemed to also balance me! Of course I wanted to pull in some gifts from the sea to add elements I personally enjoyed. You will notice that many shells also have an innate symmetry to them. I hope viewers can experience a sense of harmony when looking at them, and that the soft coastal colors amplify this effect. These pieces were created as a series and complement each other nicely in sets of two, three or four.
