How High to Hang Art (and How Big It Should Be)
Hang art so its center sits 57 to 60 inches from the floor, and over a sofa or bed choose a piece about two-thirds as wide as the furniture. Here's how to measure, mark and hang it.

In short
- Hang art so its center is 57 to 60 inches from the floor, the height galleries use.
- Over a sofa or a bed, leave 8 to 10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the frame.
- Choose a piece about two-thirds as wide as the furniture under it.
- Measure the wall first, then pick the size: every piece page lists the exact inches.
Most art in most homes hangs too high. The fix takes a tape measure, a pencil and about ten minutes, and it changes how the whole room feels: the art joins the furniture instead of floating above it.
The rule galleries use: 57 to 60 inches
Measure 57 to 60 inches up from the floor and make a small pencil mark. That's where the center of the art goes, not the top and not the nail. It's average eye level, and it's the height galleries and museums hang to, so a piece looks right whether you're standing in front of it or walking past.
How high to hang art above a sofa
Over furniture, the furniture sets the height. Art that sits close to the sofa reads as one arrangement; art that's too high reads as two.
Measure the sofa's width
From arm to arm. A typical sofa is 84 inches.
Take two-thirds of it
That's the width to aim for: about 56 inches for an 84-inch sofa, as one piece or a pair.
Mark 8 to 10 inches above the back
That line is where the bottom of the frame goes.
Hang from the mark up
Measure from the hanging wire to the top of the frame, add the frame's height, and set the nail so the bottom edge lands on your line.

Art above a bed
The same rule works over a bed: about two-thirds of the headboard's width, 6 to 10 inches above its top. A wide piece suits a bed especially well, because it follows the line of the headboard.
What size art for your wall
Most of Jennifer's prints come in three sizes, and every piece page lists the exact inches for each, framed and as canvas. As a rough guide:
- Small (around 16 × 24 inches): a hallway, a powder room, beside a window, over a nightstand.
- Medium (around 24 × 36 inches): over a console, a dresser or a reading chair.
- Large (around 30 × 45 inches, or a wide piece like 48 × 24): over a sofa, a bed or a fireplace.
Measure the wall first, then choose the piece. The other way round is how art ends up too small.”
Hanging a pair or a group
Treat a group as one piece: find the center of the whole arrangement and put it at 57 to 60 inches. Keep 2 to 3 inches between frames so they read as a set, and line up either the tops or the centers, not both.

Questions people ask
How high should a picture be hung?
Hang it so the center of the picture is 57 to 60 inches from the floor. That's eye level for most people, and it's the height galleries and museums use.
How far above a couch should art hang?
Leave 8 to 10 inches between the back of the couch and the bottom of the frame. Any higher and the art floats away from the furniture; any lower and heads touch it.
What size art goes over a king bed?
A king headboard is about 76 inches wide, so look for art around 50 inches wide, or a pair of pieces that together span about that width, hung 2 to 3 inches apart.
Should art be centered on the wall or on the furniture?
On the furniture. If a sofa or a bed sits off-center on the wall, center the art on the sofa or the bed, not on the wall.
