Oh So Fresh!

Oh So Fresh — layered paper collage of navy and turquoise palm fronds, coral leaves, and a white hibiscus on a soft cream ground
Oh So Fresh!

I carefully choose all the colors I collage with, and consider how they will play against and complement each other. I’ve gone back to my favorite combination of colors, which is navy and turquoise. For one, they are unexpected together, but they are also made more beautiful in combination with corals and peach tones. I’ve wanted white to play a bigger role in the last few pieces I’ve made, so I intentionally layered it throughout the background as well as the middle and top layer.

“Fauvism” was an art movement in the early 1900s led by Henri Matisse, where artists were prioritizing using color to evoke the feeling they were trying to convey, versus being tied down to the actual color of a realistic representation.

“Fresh” is the sensation I was trying to express with this piece. This is more important to me than showing all the shades of green this bouquet may have. That fresh out of the laundry, cool, clean, airy sensation. I enjoy playing with words and spending time titling my work so that the title further expresses the experience of the piece, and this made for a fun one. Fresh used in other ways can mean flirty, today it can also mean cool and hip, and I love these other interpretations of this energetic word.

I hope, as you look at this piece, you feel Oh So Fresh!
